I first ordered a Ninja Professional blender, but sent it back -- while the Ninja was an excellent macerator, it never really blended. Each smoothie felt like a collection of tiny pieces of the ingredients. Also, the Ninja didn't pull the ingredients down toward the blades, but rather splashed them up onto the sides, making it so that I could never really see how much finished product I had in there.
The KicthenAid 5-speed does the job very well. It pulls all the ingredients down in a vortex, doesn't aerate them too much, and really breaks them apart so that the resulting smoothie is smooth and creamy. It doesn't quite manage to break down all the tiny raspberry and blackberry seeds, but it does greatly reduce the number of these seeds that remain whole and crunchy compared to my old Cuisinart model. I regularly throw in whole apples, citrus, carrots, brussels sprouts, cabbage, kiwis -- all that stuff is broken down into a nice uniform smoothie stuff.
Cleanup is also very easy, I love that the blade assembly is all in one piece with the jar so you never have to worry about dissembling it and washing the gasket. I'm also a big fan of the way this blender slowly builds up to speed; my only minor gripe is that it seems to begin by going full speed for a half second when you first hit the button. This has resulted in some unnecessary splashing, but again it's a minor gripe. Overall this is a great blender, looks and works great, powerful motor, and I expect to be using it for a number of years.
It's not too loud (for being a blender). The controls are very easy to use and you can run each setting continuously or on pulse. The blades are built into the base of the blender jar, which I thought would be an issue when it comes to cleaning, but it hasn't. So far I've been able to just swish warm soapy water in it and it cleans like a dream. Also the plastic blender jar hasn't been an issue. It's a very thick clear acrylic type material and it's so much lighter than glass, which is nice when lifting it off the base and the blender is full of heavy smoothie. It's a slightly squared jar shape, but I haven't had any issues with things not blending well or collecting in the corners.
I did a lot research endure picking out my new blender and I'm so glad I picked this one. If you're looking for a general purpose blender that won't break the bank I highly recommend this one - plus you can pick from awesome colors! Happy blending!
I discovered this while searching for a replacement for my trusty Waring 1992 blender which has not been replicated by the company by anything comparable.
I followed one apparent "winner" and deep in the reviews discovered a better option, and deep in those reviews then discovered this option. Someone pointed to a video review which pitted this against five other blenders. Among the challenges, the reviewer put a complete, unpeeled orange in the blender. Right before your eyes, you see the blender make mincemeat out of it.
I make a chocolate banana smoothie that includes 1 1/3 cups of milk, 20 ice cubes, one banana, and Concord Chocolate Smoothie mix, available here on Amazon. This blender turns out a smoothie that is as thick and smooth as a chocolate milkshake from McDonald's, except it's 330 calories instead of over 1,000 for the same volume of McDonald's milkshakes.
I offer a couple of notes to be aware of:
The pitcher is plastic. I wish it were glass to reflect the industrial and serious nature of the unit. Someday it will be scratchy and look ugly. Eventually it will break, and I'm sure by then the same model will not be available so I'll have to buy an entire new unit just to replace a pitcher. So treat it gently.
The pitcher is also huuuuge compared to my Waring pitcher. Your smoothie ingredients will feel very small in the pitcher and you'll be tempted to add more ice. Don't. Once it blends it will rise and add 30-40% of volume to the pitcher.
The blender has a killer tool for crushing ice, which automatically pulses the action so the ice keeps re-dropping to the blades and gets another jolt, over and over. It's brilliant. I do note that my lights dim during every pulse, so I tend to do it in the dark because it appears to be using a ton of electricity (during the ice crushing operation only) and I don't want to blow a circuit.
Finally, when you put the blender on puree as the last part of the smoothie equation, it is louder than a jet engine. If you live in a shared building, you'll need to make smoothies between 8 a.m. and 10 p.m. As a realistic comparison, it's louder than a lawn mower would be if you had one in your kitchen. I've actually searched a bit for a container like the coffee shops use to hold in the noise, but have been unsuccessful so far.
Still, I've been making smoothies since 1992. They have never been this good, this consistently, since getting this blender.
